#1  American Dental Association

Give Kids A Smile

Mission and Purpose

Since 2003 the Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) organization has helped more than 6 million undeserved children by providing oral health care.

The GKAS day is the first Friday in February, but the GKAS events are held throughout the year.

The program began all the way back in 2002 when Dr. Jeff Dalin and Dr. B. Ray Storm held the first event in a soon to be demolished dental clinic in St Louis. They were able to scrape together 15 chairs. In these humble beginnings they took care of 400 children.

The next year in 2003, the American Dental Association recognized the grass roots efforts of these two pioneering dentists and helped to develop the program into a nationwide philanthropic movement.

Becoming A Member and Getting Involved

If you’re a dentist reading this, you’re probably already an ADA member, which qualifies you to participate in the GKAS events. If you’re not an ADA Member you can become one here.

In order to get involved in the GKAS movement, all you have to do is download the toolkit.

The Toolkit includes registration information, planning guides, forms, waivers and promotional materials.

The ADA invites all dentists who want to make a difference in the lives of children to get involved.

The foundation started in 2011 and since then has helped more than 40,ooo smiles in 7 countries, with more than 30 million dollars in donated dentistry.

This mission grew from Smile Brands Inc.’s philosophy of delivering “Smiles for Everyone” including patients, affiliated providers and employees, as well as the community. Patients are referred to a Day of Giving through the Foundation’s partnerships with nonprofit organizations in the local community.

#15  Charitable Smiles

Mission and Purpose

Charitable Smiles’ goal is to help as many people as possible, which is why they have NOT narrowed their assistance to any specific area or dental specialty. They found this strategy to be counterproductive and collaborate with every dental specialty in the industry.

Their efficient charity model of using practicing dental clinics and dentists to facilitate cause related dentistry translates to a zero dollars wasted on infrastructure.

Usually dentists who want to participate in charity dentistry are forced to write off the full cost of expenses associated with a treatment, but with Charitable Smiles a dentist can volunteer chair time to Charitable Smiles patients.

Becoming A Member and Getting Involved

Charity opportunties are:

Partnerships: Dentists can donate chair time to provide dental services to those in need. Please reach out to the charity directly if this is what you’d like to do.

Donations: Each one million dollars raised roughly equates to 7,200 patients served. If you’re interested in donating to the charity you can do that here.

#16  Oral Health Foundation

National Smile Month & Mouth Cancer Action Month

charities for dental practices

Mission and Purpose

Originating in the UK and serving dentists in the United States, the Oral health Foundation has several charitable dental marketing opportunities.

In April 2016 the British Dental Health Foundation changed their name to The Oral Health Foundation to better represent their growing body or global influence and work.

The Oral Health Foundation is an independent charity (not for profit) dedicated to improving oral health and wellbeing around the world. For more than 45 years we have continued to provide expert, independent and impartial advice on all aspects of oral health directly to those who need it most.

We work closely with governments, dental and health professionals, manufacturers, the dental trade, national and local agencies and the public, to achieve our mission of addressing the inequalities which exist in oral health, changing people’s lives for the better.

Formed in 1971, the concept of preventive dentistry and the benefits which could ensue from it were then very new and being practiced by only a small proportion of the dental profession. The founding fathers of the Oral Health Foundation wished to see the preventive message that ‘Teeth are for Life’ spread as widely as possible, with the aim of improving the overall oral health of everyone.

Becoming A Member and Getting Involved

We organize and run two annual campaigns in the UK, which we also support in the USA, National Smile Month and Mouth Cancer Action Month, in addition to school-based programmes like Dental Buddy. We use these campaigns to spread public awareness of oral health issues via the press while encouraging the health profession to be more active in education and oral health promotion in their local communities.

These campaigns have also grown overseas. We have helped health bodies and organisations in Ireland, the United States of America and the Middle East, all conduct their very own National Smile Month. We have also assisted oral health associations in eastern Europe organise dedicated mouth cancer campaigns.
